Painting the Lavender Fields

Recently I was asked by a lady I met at the Friends of the ROI if I would paint with her at some lavender fields and of course I said yes! We went to Castle Farm Lavender in Kent and painted en plein air. We had to book a slot and so I opted for an evening “walk” in the lavender and we painted from 4.30 - 7.30pm just as the sun was lowering
It was a hot summer’s evening and we were surrounded by the wonderful scent of the lavender. I could even smell it as I drove into the location from the car! Castle Farm also has a farm shop, cafe and coffee stalls plus they do tours of the lavender harvesting process - it’s really worth a visit.
I managed two paintings, although the second was more of a quick sketch just to get the colours down as the sun was setting fast and the fields were closing for the day
Back in the Studio I decided I’d like to scale up with a larger painting. I took what I remembered from having painted there plein air, to recall the light and shadows on the fields and I tried hard to get that warm summer’s evening atmosphere as the sun went down. I hope you like it!
